Four students at Masinde Muliro University of Science and Technology (MMUST) have faced disciplinary measures after a disorderly event occurred in a classroom.

The students participating in the physical exchange recorded on video and subsequently shared online have been put on hold by the institution.
What was the reason for MMUST suspending four students?
On Friday, March 27, in an official message, Vice Chancellor Prof. Solomon Shibairo stated that the university had located the students responsible for the incident at MEA 001 Lecture Hall and implemented measures according to MMUST’s policies.
A statement mentioned, ‘In response to a report about the assault that occurred in MEA 001 Lecture Hall on the afternoon of Wednesday, March 25th, 2026, the University has implemented the following measures,’
As per the memo, the students implicated in the assault that has faced criticism were recognized, detained, and brought to the security office.
The university also gathered accounts from the individuals concerned, such as the students who were attacked, those accused of committing the incident, the instructor present, and the class representative.
MMUST stated that disciplinary actions had already been taken, leading to the suspension of four students who were found guilty according to the Students’ Regulations Handbook.
“As a center for advanced education, we strongly reject these instances of violence and disorder. We urge all students to stay composed and uphold the sense of solidarity, adhering to the guidelines and policies set by the university to guarantee their well-being,” the Vice Chancellor mentioned.
What occurred in the widely shared MMUST lecture hall altercation?
The event, which took place on Wednesday, March 25, gained public attention following the release of a video online that depicted a heated clash during an ongoing lecture.
In the video, two students are shown physically assaulting a peer while other students observe.
The instructor, standing close to the whiteboard with a document in hand, seems incapable of stepping in as the scenario worsens, with the aggressors audible in their accusations against the victims for causing disturbance in the class.
A short time later, the situation becomes calm, with the two students who were attacked being pulled out of the lecture hall as order is slowly reestablished.
The clip rapidly circulated on social media, sparking theories about what might have caused the incident.

Different reports surfaced, with some indicating the conflict was connected to student political activities, while others rejected the allegations as baseless.
A story shared by a student known as Tom Shelby on Facebook presented an alternative account, indicating that the two students who were assaulted had first been asked to exit the lecture due to allegedly being under the influence.
As per his description, the circumstances worsened when the same students came back to the lecture room and started abusing the instructor, causing others to intervene.
Although there are ongoing stories, the university has not provided a comprehensive explanation regarding the reason for the conflict.
