Kenyan individuals have encountered unfortunate situations where funds sent back to their country were misused rather than allocated for their intended functions, like purchasing goods or acquiring necessary items.

A developer from Kenya living abroad recognized a gap in the market and created an application aimed at solving the issue of money transfers.
In an interview with ECHOVISATA.co.ke, the developer mentioned that the concept for the Nuvv App, an online shopping platform, was inspired by daily life.
“When I relocated to the US, I frequently received requests from home; someone needed food, or the children I assist through Charity required school supplies. I would send money, but I wasn’t always able to monitor how it was spent. One day, I wondered, what if people could contribute directly to what is needed instead of sending money? That’s how Nuvv came into existence, aiming to simplify and make giving and purchasing transparent and collaborative,” he said.
What is the Nuvv Application?
Nuvv is a shopping platform created to help consumers in Kenya and overseas access goods and services at more affordable prices and with greater clarity.
The application enables users to make purchases via group buying or split payments, allowing both individuals and companies to obtain expensive items without experiencing financial pressure.
Nuvv offers two primary functions, Group Buy and Split Pay. With Group Buy, users can join Nuvv Spaces, virtual communities akin to Facebook or WhatsApp groups, where participants can collectively buy products such as electronics, agricultural supplies, or groceries at reduced rates.
This method allows both individuals and small enterprises throughout Africa to purchase in large quantities while ensuring that each delivery is sent directly to its designated destination.
Vendors can also establish their own Areas to draw in and interact with possible customers.
Alternatively, the Split Pay feature enables users to divide expenses for particular purchases or occasions like weddings, birthdays, baby showers, or charitable initiatives.
A user easily loads their shopping cart, shares a link via social media, and encourages others—like friends, family, or even people they don’t know—to help with the purchase.
For example, a student requiring school supplies can raise money through crowdfunding directly to their Nuvv cart instead of asking for cash contributions.
“It has made shopping more interactive and open. For instance, a Kenyan in the U.S. can now assist their parents back home by directly paying for their groceries in the Nuvv cart. Alternatively, a group of friends can collectively purchase a phone as a birthday present. It helps people stay connected, even when they are on different continents,” Betty K, a Kenyan user of the app explained.

What is the number of users on the platform?
The service already boasts thousands of users throughout Kenya and the diaspora, primarily in the United States, United Kingdom, and the Middle East.
“Numerous individuals utilize Nuvv to purchase food for their families back home or support friends’ baby showers, school initiatives, and charitable efforts. We are broadening our presence throughout Africa and collaborating with additional sellers and brands. In the near future, users will be able to use Nuvv Spaces more like online shopping groups for deals, conversations, and teamwork. The objective is to simplify community-based purchasing and giving,” the founder mentioned.
Kenyan creators and business leaders have the potential to bring about significant change by developing remedies for the everyday social and economic issues that the population encounters.
