In the realm of consumer goods, conventional reasoning suggests that among various devices, including high-end models and more affordable options, the cheaper alternatives are likely to outsell the pricier ones.

Expensive items are often viewed as desirable and eye-catching, functioning more as a way to draw customers to the product line rather than to purchase the most luxurious option. For instance, the car company Porsche has the 911 as its famous sports car, but in 2024, the brand sold more of its more affordable Cayenne and Macan models. The same trend applies to Tesla: the Model Y outsells its top-of-the-line Model S.

But in the realm of mobile devices, this trend appears to be reversed. According toCounterpoint Research, the top-selling phone of the second quarter of 2025 is theiPhone 16, followed by the iPhone 16 Pro Max and iPhone 16 Pro, which in total sold more than the standard 16. And theSamsung Galaxy S25 Ultrais the top-selling model in theGalaxy S25family, despite its high cost and large size.

It’s unusual, as although we’ve had those models on ourbest phoneslist, I believe the ECHOVISATAphones team and I would likely suggest the more affordable models as the best fit for both individuals. However, the sales data does not seem to support this.

And I believe the same situation will occur this year, as when I carried outa survey asking what iPhone 17 model users actually bought, the iPhone 17 Pro and iPhone 17 Pro Maxaccounted for 50% of the total votes, divided equally between them.

This isn’t very surprising, as from what I’ve observed anecdotally, I notice more individuals using Pro iPhones compared to their regular counterparts, even though these users might not be creative professionals requiring three rear cameras for content creation or mobile gamers seeking the performance of a Pro-level A-series chip; I might be making broad assumptions here, but having written about phones for many years, I have a strong intuition about this.

Perhaps this is because once someone spends, for example, over $700 / £700 on a smartphone, it’s not too difficult to spend a little more to obtain a premium flagship model. Alternatively, Apple and Samsung have effectively demonstrated their high-end phones, leading people not only to desire them but also to purchase them. After all, a phone is likely one of the most frequently used devices you own, so investing in the best option within your budget could be logical.

But I’d like a bit more background, so use the poll above to let me know what the most crucial feature of an iPhone Pro is that leads you to pick it over the regular models. If I’ve overlooked anything, feel free to mention it in the comments below.
