No more excuses, Tinubu says to military leaders

President Bola Tinubu, on Thursday, urged the newly appointed military leaders to step up their efforts in combating terrorism, cattle rustling, and other unlawful acts throughout the nation.

Tinubu, who issued this directive at the Presidential Villa, shortly following the promotion of the military leaders to their new positions, highlighted that citizens anticipate outcomes, not just justifications.

The president, during the previous week, initiated a significant restructuring within the nation’s security framework.

The recently appointed officials of the country’s military forces are: Lieutenant-General, now General Olufemi Oluyede, serving as Chief of Defence Staff; and Major-General, now Lieutenant-General Emmanuel Undiendeye, holding the position of Chief of Defence Intelligence.

Other individuals include Major-General, now Lieutenant-General Waidi Shaibu, serving as Chief of Army Staff; Air Vice Marshal, now Air Marshal Kevin Aneke, as Chief of Air Staff; and Rear Admiral, now Vice Admiral Idi Abbas, as Chief of Naval Staff.

After the ceremony, Tinubu stated, “We must not let the crisis that started in 2009 continue any further. I urge you, as leaders of our country’s military forces, to perform your responsibilities with a sense of national pride.”

Nigerians desire outcomes, not just explanations. I also encourage you to be creative, proactive, and bold. Let’s remain ahead of those who aim to disturb our tranquility. Let us utilize technology where required.

The event took place at the Council Chambers of the Presidential Villa and was attended by Vice President Kashim Shettima; Senate President Godswill Akpabio along with his assistant, Senator Barau Jibrin.

Speaker Tajudeen Abbas and his assistant, Benjamin Kalu; the Senate Majority Leader, Opeyemi Bamidele and the head of the Appropriations Committee, Olamilekan Adeola, were also present.

Also in attendance were the Governors of Kwara, Abdulrahman Abdulrazak; Jigawa, Umar Namadi; Lagos, Babajide Sanwo-Olu; and Ogun, Dapo Abiodun.

Notable attendees also comprised the Secretary to the Federal Government, George Akume; Chief of Staff, Femi Gbajabiamila; Head of the Civil Service, Esther Didi Walson-Jack; and Chairmen of the Defence Committees in the National Assembly, Ahmad Lawan and Babajimi Benson.

The Defence Minister, Mohammed Badaru Abubakar; Finance Minister, Wale Edun; Information Minister, Muhammed Idris; and National Security Advisor, Nuhu Ribadu, were also present.

Tinubu, as he assigned the new military leaders the responsibility of dismantling the operations of newly formed armed groups that have reorganized in various regions of the country, emphasized that he will not accept any justifications.

Security risks are continuously changing and adapting. A major worry for our administration is the recent rise of new militant groups in the North-Central, North-West, and certain areas of the South.

“It is essential that we do not let these emerging dangers grow. We need to act firmly and take the initiative. Let us eliminate the new snakes right from the start,” said Nigeria’s leader.

He pledged the federal government’s military forces assistance, emphasizing that the protection and security of Nigerians are crucial for the country’s progress.

He called on the military leaders to promote cooperation and demonstrate outstanding leadership in every aspect of their activities.

On behalf of the service leaders, the Chief of Defence Staff, General Olufemi Oluyede, expressed gratitude to the President for considering them suitable for their positions.

Oluyede called on Nigerians to back the armed forces in their efforts to protect Nigeria’s borders and eliminate terrorism, cattle rustling, and other unlawful acts.

He further pledged to the president their commitment to ensuring the nation’s security.

“Security should be our priority, but without the backing of Nigerians, we can accomplish very little. I urge Nigerians from all ethnic backgrounds to stand with us, and in the end, we will create a safer Nigeria for you,” he stated.

I will focus on operations guided by intelligence

In his official assumption of command over the military, the newly appointed defense chief, General Oluyede, pledged to enhance intelligence-driven operations and improve coordination among security and defense agencies.

The transfer of authority ceremony, which took place at the Defence Headquarters in Abuja, included General Christopher Musa, Oluyede’s predecessor, as a guest.

Oluyede stated that Nigeria’s changing security risks—such as terrorism, banditry, cybercrime, and issues related to maritime safety—demand an intelligence-based approach that relies on cooperation among all security agencies.

He stated, “The type of threats our country faces demands that we remain constantly alert, creative, and united. We will strengthen intelligence-based operations and increase cooperation with other security and law enforcement agencies to restore and maintain peace and stability throughout the nation.”

The updated CDS highlighted that intelligence collection and exchange would be key to the renewed defense strategy under his direction, stating that unity, expertise, and responsibility would guide military activities in the future.

Oluyede also committed to using research, training, and technology to enhance understanding of situations, anticipate operations, and identify potential threats at an early stage.

He further stated, ‘We will focus on developing capabilities, conducting research, and fostering technological innovation to improve operational efficiency and long-term planning.’

He additionally pledged his dedication to the well-being of the soldiers.

Equally significant is the well-being of our personnel, which continues to be crucial for operational success.

Under my direction, the Defence Headquarters will remain committed to promoting better well-being, housing, healthcare, and educational prospects for service members and their loved ones.

“We will also focus on the moral and mental health of our soldiers, making sure their sacrifices are acknowledged and compensated,” he stated.

Previously, the former CDS, General Musa, called on the military and intelligence sectors to provide Oluyede with complete support, referring to him as a ‘distinguished officer possessing strategic vision and outstanding qualifications.’

He stated, “I have been familiar with him for many years, and I can confirm his professionalism, strategic vision, and commitment to his responsibilities. I call on the service leaders to provide him with complete support so that they can function as a unified team. I encourage each officer and soldier to show him the same loyalty, teamwork, and dedication that you have shown me.”

The challenge that lies ahead is still challenging, but with your assistance and his guidance, I am confident the military will reach new levels of achievement and accomplish even more significant victories.

Criminals causing fear in Nigeria will not escape punishment

From his side, the newly appointed Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant-General Waidi Shaibu, pledged to implement firm measures to address instability and safeguard Nigerians from criminal dangers.

During the handover event held at the Army Headquarters in Abuja, Shaibu characterized the current security conditions—leading to fear among citizens, displacement, and economic challenges—as intolerable.

He stated, “We clearly reside in challenging times, yet I have no hesitation in believing that we are resilient individuals as well. I am conscious of the evolving circumstances in certain areas of our nation, which have caused lawful citizens to face financial difficulties, fear, and relocation. Such conditions are unacceptable and require my immediate focus.”

He pledged an immediate assessment of the security situation and the implementation of new approaches to ‘reduce and eventually overcome the danger.’

“I wish to assure the President, our Commander-in-Chief, and all Nigerians that we will not let the country down,” he added.

Shaibu praised his predecessor for advancements in equipment acquisition, infrastructure development, and leadership within the Army during the last 11 months. He promised to continue building upon these achievements, enhance the Army’s flexibility and readiness for combat, and strengthen cooperation with other security organizations.

He extended messages of motivation and appreciation to soldiers stationed in multiple combat zones.

“As someone who has been with you throughout most of this battle, I understand you, I understand your families, and we will not let you down,” he said.

He also paid tribute to deceased soldiers, requesting a moment of silence and pledging that the Army would remain committed to supporting their families.

“A fresh day has begun, and I feel we have a task ahead,” stated the new Chief of Army Staff.

We will spare no effort in enhancing Nigeria’s security – Air chief

The Air Force Chief, Air Vice Marshal Sunday Aneke, officially took charge on Thursday, vowing to make every effort to achieve rapid progress in the country’s security.

Aneke, who serves as the 23rd Chief of the Air Staff, assumed command from his predecessor, Air Marshal Hasan Abubaker, in a formal event conducted at the Nigerian Air Force Headquarters in Abuja.

In his first speech, the new CAS referred to his appointment as a summons to serve the nation and thanked President Tinubu for the trust placed in him.

He promised steadfast allegiance to President Bola Tinubu and a dedication to placing the well-being of officers, airmen, and airwomen in the Nigerian Air Force first.

He stated, “Being appointed as the twenty-third Chief of the Air Staff is both a privilege and a deeply humbling moment. I would like to specifically express my gratitude to the President and Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, Bola Ahmed Tinubu, for the honor and unique opportunity granted to me to serve Nigeria,” he said.

He promised his allegiance and that of all Air Force members to the President, the Federal Government, and the people of Nigeria.

‘I further promise my allegiance and that of the Nigerian Air Force officers, airmen, and airwomen to Nigeria’s government and citizens, as stated in the 1999 Constitution,’ Aneke mentioned.

The incoming Air Chief pledged to continue and enhance the accomplishments of his predecessor, especially in current operations targeting insurgency and other internal security challenges.

He pledged that the NAF would remain cooperative with other military and security organizations to enhance national security.

“Collectively, we will spare no effort in fulfilling our constitutional duties alongside other sister Services, security, intelligence, and law enforcement agencies to achieve rapid progress in Nigeria’s security environment,” he added.

Aneke further pledged that the well-being of staff would be a key focus during his tenure, emphasizing that a driven workforce is crucial for attaining operational effectiveness.

“I pledge to make sure that the well-being of every officer, airman, airwoman, and their family members is quickly handled to encourage them to enhance their efficiency,” he stated.

The new Chief of Naval Staff, Vice Admiral Idi Abbas, assumes duty from the previous CNS, Vice Admiral Emmanuel Ogalla Rtd, at Naval Headquarters in Abuja.

Abandon your illegal activities, naval chief warns oil suppliers

Previously, the Chief of Naval Staff, Vice Admiral Idi Abbas, during his inauguration, promised to step up the battle against unauthorized oil theft, illegal refueling, and other sea-related crimes that harm Nigeria’s economy.

During the ceremony held at the Navy Headquarters in Abuja, Abbas—23rd Chief of Naval Staff—recognized that although there have been past successes, the country’s maritime area continues to face threats from crude oil theft, piracy, illegal fishing, drug smuggling, and other criminal acts that pose risks to national security and economic development.

In response to these issues, he introduced key strategic focuses for his time in office, which involve boosting maritime security activities, improving fleet strength by actively updating the fleet and expanding the use of technology, emphasizing staff training and well-being, and increasing cooperation with other security organizations.

“I am fully aware that our maritime area continues to face a threat from the theft of crude oil, piracy at sea, illegal bunkering, unreported and unregulated fishing, as well as drug trafficking,” he stated.

These offenses not only damage our country’s economy and energy safety but also endanger the way of life for our coastal areas and the financial steadiness of our beloved nation.

To address these challenges effectively, my time in office will be shaped by a focused and practical strategy – boosting maritime security, upgrading our fleet with bold modernization and innovation, emphasizing training and the well-being of our personnel, and promoting cooperation among agencies, regions, and internationally.

Speaking about his appointment as an honor, Abbas promised to carry out his responsibilities with commitment, honesty, and faithfulness.

“With a heart full of humility and thanks to God, I stand before you today as the 23rd Chief of the Naval Staff. I am deeply thankful to the President and Commander-in-Chief, Bola Ahmed Tinubu, for considering me fit to lead the Nigerian Navy,” he stated.

He also honored his predecessor, Vice Admiral Emmanuel Ogalla, whose “visionary leadership,” he stated, provided a strong base for the Navy’s ongoing development.

Abbas called on the navy members to maintain the fundamental principles of honesty, expertise, and collaboration, promising that their well-being will continue to be a key concern.

“I pledge to take the lead and make sure your well-being is a primary concern,” he stated, reiterating the Navy’s dedication to protecting Nigeria’s waters and promoting the development of the blue economy.
